Joanna Byrne

Joanna Byrne is currently based in Leeds.  She examines what it means to use film in the digital era, often making work exploring the possibilities and limitations of celluloid as a material. Her practice continues in the experimental tradition of autonomy in all aspects of film production, and views collaboration as a creative and economic necessity. Working predominantly with 35mm slides, 8mm and 16mm, all of her films are hand-processed and manually edited, and often utilise hand-manipulated or reprocessed found footage. In her expanded cinema performances, such as Screen Kiss, she intervenes in the projection machinery, or manipulates optical and magnetic sound, to create films that can only be experienced live in the moment of their making. As part of OKO Lab she runs film workshops and events. Her work screens across the UK and internationally.
